Watch the Queen Sugar trailer; Oprah and Ava DuVernay Executive Produce new OWN drama

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network has debuted the Queen Sugar trailer. If you haven’t heard about this much buzzed about series, it is executive produced by Oprah, visionary director Ava DuVernay and Melissa Carter. The hour long drama series was inspired by the Queen Sugar novel by Natalie Baszile. The show follows a woman who moves with her daughter from Los Angeles to Louisiana when she unexpectedly inherits a struggling sugar cane farm.

Starring Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner and Kofi Siriboe, the Oscar nominated DuVernay will direct the first two episodes. Additionally, every single episode in the first season is directed by a woman.

The OWN press release states:

The contemporary drama “Queen Sugar” chronicles the lives and loves of the estranged Bordelon siblings in Saint Josephine, Louisiana: Nova (Rutina Wesley “True Blood”), a world-wide journalist and activist; Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner “Unforgettable”), the savvy wife and manager of an NBA star; and Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe “Awkward”), a formerly incarcerated young father in search of redemption. After a family tragedy, the Bordelons must navigate the triumphs and struggles of their complicated lives in order to run an ailing sugarcane farm in the Deep South.

The two  night series premiere of Queen Sugar airs September 6th and September 7th on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.
