For the third week in a row, Captain America ruled the weekend box office (April 18 through April 20, 2014) as Captain America: The Winter Soldier took in another $26.6 million. It has now grossed $201 million in 17 days in the US alone. Marvel’s MCU Phase Two projects are doing gangbusters and for good reason. The extremely strong reviews have certainly helped the film and word of mouth has been tremendous (See our review of Captain America: The Winter Soldier here).

Last week’s runner up Rio 2 remained in 2nd place with an additional $22.5 million in it’s 2nd week for a total of $75.3 million in the US. Heaven Is For Real took in $21.5 million in it’s first weekend in theaters, combining with the $7 million it made from it’s opening last Wednesday for a $28.5 million total. Transcendence didn’t make a dent in it’s first weekend taking in only $11.1 million – a disappointment for a Johnny Depp film. A Haunted House 2 made $9.1 million in it’s first weekend in theaters, a big decline from A Haunted House debut a few years ago.
