The X-Files Returning to FOX TV
|The X-Files returns to Fox for a 6 episode limited series event|
And it is finally official! After much speculation and 13 years of waiting, Fox announced today that The X-Files will be returning to TV for a 6 episode limited series run. The mega popular show shaped pop culture over 9 seasons spawning two movies, various comic book series, and an unthinkable amount of merchandise.
Debuting on Fox on Friday nights in 1993, The X-Files slowly creeped its way into the mainstream with the rise of the internet, fan boys, message boards and forums. As the show grew in popularity it switched to Sunday nights where it became one of the most watched TV series of all time. The X-Files followed skeptical scientist Dana Scully and the quick to believe Fox Mulder, two FBI agents who are assigned to investigate unsolved…and unexplainable cases. From aliens to ghosts and everything in between, The X-Files featured both stand alone episodes and longer spanning mythology episodes (“mytharc”) that grew the overall story.
The X-Files spawned two movies, The X-Files: Fight The Future (pick up Fight The Future on sale at Amazon)- released between seasons 5 & 6 – and The X-Files: I Want To Believe which was released six years after the series finale. Additionally, it spawned “The Lone Gunman” spin-off tv series and was highly connected to the Millennium tv series. Most recently, The X-Files: Season 10 comic book series (check out The X-Files: Season 10, Volume 1 on Amazon), released by IDW Publishing and written by Joe Harris and executive produced by The X-Files creator Chris Carter, has taken The X-Files story even further with it’s successful canonical story.
The X-Files limited series will begin filming this summer with Chris Carter writing, directing and producing, stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning to portray their iconic characters and the promise of more key talent returning. Carter stated, “I think of it as a 13-year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”
Fox Television Group president Gary Newman stated: “We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of ‘The X-Files’ — one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers — and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again. ‘The X-Files’ was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture — yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as ‘The X-Files’ and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”
The X-Files begins production this summer with a release and title to be announced in the coming months.
