Finally! After legal troubles, director troubles, a union contract snafu and a fire, The Hobbit has officially been greenlit. Super director / writer / producer Peter Jackson will be helming directing duties – a huge win for the fans. Jackson directed, co wrote and produced the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, but was only writing and producing The Hobbit originally. Destiny aligned itself and Jackson is back on. The press release from Jackson states “Exploring Tolkien’s Middle-earth goes way beyond a normal film-making experience. It’s an all-immersive journey into a very special place of imagination, beauty and drama. We’re looking forward to re-entering this wondrous world with Gandalf and Bilbo — and our friends at New Line Cinema, Warner Brothers and MGM.”
Principal photography will begin in February 2011 with a release date for Part 1 of December 19, 2012.
