In an interesting bombshell, CBS revealed today that Stephen Colbert will replace David Letterman as host of The Late Show when Letterman retires next year.

Les Moonves, CBS President says, “Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television. David Letterman’s legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today’s announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night.”

It is unknown where the show will film and the exact date depends upon when Letterman decides upon his final show. Stephen Colbert will not be doing The Late Show in his satirical conservative character that currently hosts the four time Emmy winning Colbert Report on Comedy Central. He will continue with Colbert Report until the end of the year.

While Colbert was one of the names thrown out immediately, many were hoping for a chance in the white male dominated late night host role that plays out each night. Chelsea Handler was one of the front-runners and would have seriously changed the game for late night shows.
