MOVIE REVIEW: Gravity (cntd)

At it’s heart, Gravity is the intense story of the will to survive. Dr. Ryan Stone, played amazingly by Sandra Bullock, is on her first space shuttle mission. Accompanying her is veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) who is on his final space expedition. When a Russian missile strike hits a satellite, a storm of high speed debris causes a chain reaction, hitting the Explorer and detaching the two from their Space Shuttle.

Alfonso Cuaron has created a deliberately anxiety producing, claustrophobic film, mimicking both the beauty and the absolute terror of space. In it’s real time timeline, we watch with baited breath as Dr Stone must use her knowledge and wits in order to survive. It is so intense that it’s actually stressful to watch. It’s also terrifying. If you can imagine being hundreds of miles above land, desperately clinging for survival, you know what it’s like to watch Gravity.

It is no small feat to make such a literally big movie feel so tiny. With the entire Earth as a backdrop, and the vast, cold darkness of space surrounding it, it would have been easier for the film to feel wide open. Instead, it feels like you too are clinging for your last breath. You feel the desperation. You feel the urgency. You feel alone.

Gravity is, without a doubt, one of the best movies of the last few years. Terrifying, intense and powerful, this is one you don’t want to miss.

NOTE: Gravity was filmed in 3D and it is worth it to pick up the 3D Blu-Ray if you have the means to watch it. While the imagery of Gravity is beautiful by itself, the 3D is executed brilliantly and adds another layer of reality to the amazing visuals.
