MOVIE REVIEW- Captain America: The Winter Soldier One Of Marvel’s Best Yet
|MOVIE REVIEW- Captain America: The Winter Soldier one of Marvel’s Best|
Where Captain America: The First Avenger had Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) becoming a hero in the past and Marvel’s The Avengers brought him to the present, Captain America: The Winter Soldier puts him smack dab in the issues of today. Now working as a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative, Rogers aka Captain America is warned by Nick Fury (the always amazing Samuel L Jackson) that something is amiss within S.H.I.E.L.D. They’ve created a weapon that spies on the public (NSA like) to help determine crimes before they’re committed, killing potentially innocent people. Once It is discovered that Fury knows about the plan, the hunt for him is on. As Captain America investigates with the help of Black Widow (played by the sexy Scarlett Johansson) and a new ally, Falcon (Anthony Mackie), he must take on a threat from his past named The Winter Soldier.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is essentially a 1970’s style political thriller told using elements that could be ripped right out of today’s headlines. The film is fast paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout most of the movie. One particularly gripping sequence involves Nick Fury being chased and attacked and makes a great case for a solo Nick Fury film (or Netflix series). It is one of the highlights in a movie with many highlights.
As with all of the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) ((Editors Note: See our Ultimate Guide to the Marvel Cinematic Universe)) the casting is absolutely on point. Chris Evans is Captain America. The good looking guy next door that you could not only trust with your dirtiest secret, but he’d help you solve it too. Scarlett Johansson gets a more screen time and a lot more to do as Black Widow. You really feel like you’re finally getting to know her character and that is a good thing indeed.
Sam Wilson, who becomes Falcon, is a welcome addition to the franchise. Anthony Mackie is immediately likable in the role. It also makes you think he could be a great addition to upcoming movies in the MCU (hint: Avengers: Age of Ultron?).
While there are a number of villains in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the one named in the subtitle is the most intriguing. His backstory (we won’t spoil it for you) brings an emotional depth to the character, while he remains quite terrifying in his power, ability and lack of empathy.
Overall, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a very welcome and satisfying addition to the MCU. In fact, it may be one of the best yet. And in a franchise with 9 movies released so far, each of them being above par, that’s really saying something.
