Prince lands first #1 album in 10 years as the legendary artist rockets to the top of the Billboard 200 Albums chart at both #1 and #2 in the wake of his April 21, 2016 passing. Two other Prince albums hit Top 10.
Billboard is reporting that the greatest hits album The Very Best of Prince takes the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 Albums chart which tracks the most popular albums of the week based on physical sales, downloads and streaming. It totaled 179,000 units which was up nearly 11,000% from the previous week. This marks Prince first #1 album in 10 years when 3121 hit #1 on April 8, 2006. As the chart week closed on the day of his death, all of these sales and streams were tallied from just one day. Expect to see continued Prince dominance on the album charts in the weeks to come.
Even more amazingly, Prince also lands the #2 spot on the Billboard 200 Albums chart as the classic album Purple Rain re-enters the chart with 69,000 units. Purple Rain spent an astounding 24 weeks at number 1 between 1984 and 1985. His triple album The Hits / The B-Sides lands at #6 with 41,000 units. Originally, The Hits / The B-Sides debuted and peaked at #19 on October 2, 1993 before quickly falling off of the charts.
His previous #1 albums are Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day (1985), Batman soundtrack (1989) and 3121 (2006).
