After three failed attempts at starting a Punisher franchise through three different movies. First was 1989’s The Punisher where Dolph Lundgren brought the character to the live action world for the first time. Unfortunately, the filmmakers completely changed his origin story and failed to even have him in his trademark skull t-shirt. It did so poorly overseas, the US theatrical release was cancelled and it went straight to home video.
2004 brought a second attempt at bringing Frank Castle to the screen as Thomas Jane portrayed The Punisher to scathing reviews. The film grossed $55 million worldwide on a budget of $33 million. John Travolta hammed it up as villain Howard Saint. A sequel with Jane lingered in development hell before it was decided to reboot the franchise again.
2008’s Punisher: War Zone featured Ray Stevenson in the title role and fared even worse then the previous film, grossing just $10 million on a $35 million budget.
Finally, with Marvel in full control, The Punisher was done right as played by Jon Bernthal in Marvel’s Daredevil series. Bernthal will continue portraying the character and the show will be written and produced by Hannibal show runner Steve Lightfoot. This will mark the sixth Marvel show on Netflix joining Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders.
