Idol’s Twitter & Facebook Privileges Taken Away

Well that was quick. In mid-February Fox announced, that for the first time in American Idol history, the contestants would each have a social media presence. Each of the Top 24 was given their own Twitter account, MySpace page & Facebook page. Exactly 2 weeks later, that dream has died. Today, Fox posted a statement on each of the contestants accounts saying: “Thanks so much for following me! All my updates from now on will be on our Official AI9 Twitter Page, please follow me there @AI9Contestants.”  Presumably, a similar statement will be posted to the Facebook & MySpace profiles as they’re deleted. The problem was, it could unfairly influence the results of the show by publicly posting popularity statistics like “followers”, “fans” or “friends”.

You’d think the minds behind the #1 television show in US history would have thought about that before hand.
So what do you think? Now how will you get that late night message out to Siobhan that you want to play Wicked Games with her? Let us know in the comments!
