The film is a theatrical retelling of the 1853 memoirs of Solomon Northup. Northup was a free man from New York who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. and sold into slavery. Produced by Brad Pitt and directed by Steve McQueen, the film has a huge cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberpatch, Paul Giamtti, Brad Pitt, Sarah Paulson, Alfre Woodard and newly crowned Best Supporting Actress winner Lupita Nyong’o.
